Automatic litter box

Self-cleaning, without asking your cat to walk into a drum.

Most automatic boxes are enclosed cylinders, and plenty of cats will not go into one. This is open at the top — the cat steps into something that still looks like a tray, and the raking happens underneath afterwards.

Odour

Filtered, then treated

Waste drops into a sealed compartment under the tray, and the air above it passes through a layered filter rather than being pushed back into the room. There is also a UV cycle intended to slow bacterial growth in the compartment between empties.

None of that removes the need to empty it. It buys you days, not weeks.

Control

From the app, or from the box

Start a clean, check the tray, and get told when the waste drawer is full, without standing over it. The seal around the drawer is what keeps the smell in when it is sitting there full.

It is a mains appliance and a heavy one — about 9.5 kg empty — so decide where it lives before you unbox it.

Questions people ask

Will my cat actually use it?

An open top is the easiest style to introduce, because it still reads as a tray. Put it where the old box was, keep the old box alongside for a week, and let them choose.

How often do I empty it?

Depends on the cat. The sealed drawer and filter are what let you leave it several days rather than doing it twice a day — but it is a drawer full of waste, and it does need emptying.

Is it safe for a kitten?

Automatic boxes are generally not recommended for kittens or very small cats, because the sensors are calibrated for an adult's weight. Use a normal tray until they are grown.

Does it need special litter?

Use a clumping litter. Non-clumping and crystal litters do not rake cleanly and will jam the mechanism.

Sizing. Measure your pet nose to base of tail and compare with the measurements in the description. Breed names are a poor guide - two dogs of the same breed can be 4 kg apart.

Washing. Beds and blankets are machine washable unless the description says otherwise. Wash covers separately, warm not hot, and tumble dry low so the filling keeps its shape.

Introducing something new. Change food gradually over about a week, mixing an increasing share of the new food in. Put a new bed where the old one was rather than somewhere better.

Safety. Supervise play with plush and rope toys, and put wand toys away between sessions. No toy is indestructible.
