Self-Rolling Dog Ball: E-TPU Shell, Tap to Wake, 82 mm
Regular price $37.00

Play

A ball that keeps going after you have stopped throwing.

Give it a tap and it wakes up and rolls on its own, changing direction as it goes, so the chase does not stop the moment you sit down. The shell is E-TPU, light and bouncy with a textured surface, and it recharges rather than eating batteries.

How it works

Tap to wake

It ships asleep so it does not flatten itself in the post. A tap wakes it, and it starts rolling and turning by itself.

The maker’s photos show it on timber and on a flat rug. Like any rolling ball, it will slow right down on thick carpet.

The shell

E-TPU, and why that matters

E-TPU is expanded thermoplastic polyurethane — the same family of foam used in running-shoe soles. It is light, it bounces, and it takes a knock off a skirting board without cracking.

The maker calls it bite-resistant. We are not going to call anything with a battery inside it indestructible, and neither should anyone else.

The size

82 mm across

Bigger than a tennis ball. Medium and large dogs can pick it up; most small dogs will chase it, nose it and bat it rather than carry it.

For a dog that likes to herd things around the house, that is not a drawback.

The surface

Textured all over

The raised pattern gives a dog something to grip and makes the ball easier to pick up off a smooth floor.

The maker says the texture helps clean teeth. Call that a small bonus, not a reason to buy it.

Good to know

Questions people ask

Is it a chew toy?

No. You will see balls like this sold for “aggressive chewers” elsewhere. There is a battery and a motor inside this one. Use it for supervised play, put it away afterwards, and take it off a dog that starts working at the shell with its back teeth.

How do I charge it?

It has a built-in rechargeable battery. The maker’s photos do not show the charging point, so rather than describe one we have not seen, we will point you to the instructions in the box.

Is it right for a small dog?

At 82 mm it is too big for most small dogs to carry. Plenty of small dogs love chasing and pushing it around regardless; just do not expect it back in your hand.

Will it work on carpet?

On low, flat carpet and rugs, yes. On deep pile it slows right down, as any rolling ball does.

Does it bounce?

Yes, E-TPU is springy. That makes it lively on hard floors and means it is best kept away from anything breakable at shelf height.

Sizing. Measure your pet nose to base of tail and compare with the measurements in the description. Breed names are a poor guide - two dogs of the same breed can be 4 kg apart.

Washing. Beds and blankets are machine washable unless the description says otherwise. Wash covers separately, warm not hot, and tumble dry low so the filling keeps its shape.

Introducing something new. Change food gradually over about a week, mixing an increasing share of the new food in. Put a new bed where the old one was rather than somewhere better.

Safety. Supervise play with plush and rope toys, and put wand toys away between sessions. No toy is indestructible.
