Cat toys

Switch it on, put it down, get out of the way.

A 5 cm mouse with two rows of stiff bristles underneath. The motor buzzes, the bristles walk it forward, and it takes off across the floor — bounces off a skirting board, spins, and sets off somewhere else. No remote, no app, and no wand for you to wave at six in the morning.

It runs on three LR44 button cells, fitted at the factory. Button batteries are dangerous if swallowed. The compartment is held shut with two screws — leave them in, keep spare cells out of reach of children and pets, and if you think one has been swallowed, treat it as an emergency: Poisons Information Centre, 13 11 26.

How it moves

Bristles, not wheels

Underneath are two rows of angled bristles. The motor vibrates, the bristles flex and grip, and the whole thing walks forward quickly. Nothing steers it — it runs until it hits a chair leg, turns, and goes again. The randomness is the point: a cat loses interest in anything that repeats.

It works on hard floors — boards, tiles, lino. On a thick rug it bogs down, and on deep carpet it will not go anywhere at all. If your house is carpeted throughout, this is a toy for the kitchen and the hallway.

Three colours

Grey, green or yellow

The same mouse in three flocked finishes with printed markings. The flocking is short and smooth rather than furry, so it does not leave fluff on the floor.

Each one is 5 cm long and 3.5 cm tall — roughly the size of the thing it is imitating, which is rather the point.

One, or three

The three-pack has one of each

Two cats and one mouse ends in a dispute. Three mice ends in a chase. It also means there is a spare for the day one goes under the fridge, which it will.

Questions people ask

Does it work on carpet?

Not well. The bristles need a hard surface to push against. On floorboards, tiles or lino it is quick; on a low rug it is slow; on deep carpet it sits there and buzzes.

How long do the batteries last?

The maker publishes no figure, and we would rather not invent one. They are LR44 cells — the same ones in a kitchen scale, sold in every supermarket. Buy a card of them with the toy and you will not think about it again.

Is it a chew toy?

No. It is a plastic shell with flocking over it. A cat that settles down to take something apart will get through it, and there are button cells inside. Chase with it while you are in the room, then put it away.

Can my dog play with it?

A small, gentle dog, with you watching. For most dogs a 5 cm object is a choking size rather than a toy.

Is it noisy?

It buzzes, and it skitters. On floorboards at five in the morning, that carries. The switch is on the base for exactly this reason.

What if the mouse stops moving?

Nine times out of ten it is hair wrapped around the bristles, or flat cells. Pull the hair off, try fresh batteries, and only then email us.

Sizing. Measure your pet nose to base of tail and compare with the measurements in the description. Breed names are a poor guide - two dogs of the same breed can be 4 kg apart.

Washing. Beds and blankets are machine washable unless the description says otherwise. Wash covers separately, warm not hot, and tumble dry low so the filling keeps its shape.

Introducing something new. Change food gradually over about a week, mixing an increasing share of the new food in. Put a new bed where the old one was rather than somewhere better.

Safety. Supervise play with plush and rope toys, and put wand toys away between sessions. No toy is indestructible.
