How it works

Motion starts it, not you

The sensor in the base wakes it when your cat comes within about 1.2 m, so the play happens when the cat decides, including when you are out of the room.

The tail pops out of one hole and disappears into another. It is the hide-and-seek that makes it work: a cat can never quite see where it will come out next.

Glass, gloss or tile

Suction cups hold it to flat, smooth surfaces: windows, glossy doors, tiles. Wipe the spot clean first. It will not hold on textured paint, wallpaper or timber grain.

Mount it at a height where your cat has to stretch up to reach, or lay it on the floor for a cat that prefers to ambush.

Questions people ask

Will it stay on the wall?

On clean, flat, smooth surfaces, yes. On textured paint or wallpaper, no. Press it on firmly and give it a tug before you leave the cat with it — a 40 cm toy dropping off a door is a good way to make a cat wary of it for a week.

My cat is nervous. Will it scare them?

It can. The maker is upfront that it makes a sound when it starts and does not recommend it for cats frightened by sudden noises. Lay it on the floor switched off for a day so it becomes part of the furniture, then switch it on.

Can I leave my cat alone with it?

Once you have watched a few sessions, yes, with one caveat: if your cat starts chewing the tail and pulling fibres off, take it away. Swallowed fibres are the one real risk here.

Does it run all the time?

No. It rests until the sensor sees movement, then runs for a while and settles again. That is why a charge lasts much longer on the wall than the two hours of continuous running the maker quotes.

How do I charge it?

It has a built-in rechargeable battery that takes about 2.5 hours to fill. There are no batteries to buy.

Sizing. Measure your pet nose to base of tail and compare with the measurements in the description. Breed names are a poor guide - two dogs of the same breed can be 4 kg apart.

Washing. Beds and blankets are machine washable unless the description says otherwise. Wash covers separately, warm not hot, and tumble dry low so the filling keeps its shape.

Introducing something new. Change food gradually over about a week, mixing an increasing share of the new food in. Put a new bed where the old one was rather than somewhere better.

Safety. Supervise play with plush and rope toys, and put wand toys away between sessions. No toy is indestructible.
