Squeaky plush

Eight legs, which is eight things to grab.

A 32 cm knitted octopus with a squeaker in the body and eight textured legs. Dogs pick it up by a leg, shake it, and the rest of it flails — which is exactly the movement that keeps a dog interested in a soft toy past the first afternoon.

The legs

Why the shape works

A ball goes still the moment a dog stops moving. This does not: eight loose legs keep swinging, so the toy carries on behaving like prey while the dog is still holding it.

The legs are ribbed on the underside, which gives teeth something to work against and makes it easier to grip for a tug.

Build

Knitted, not fleece

The outer is a tight knit rather than the loose fleece most plush toys use. It resists picking and pilling better, and holds its shape after a wash.

It is still a soft toy. No plush survives a determined chewer, and the squeaker inside is a swallowing hazard once the seams give. Supervise play, check it over now and then, and bin it when it starts to open.

Good to know

Questions people ask

Is it strong enough for a big dog?

It suits carrying, shaking and gentle tugging by dogs of any size. It is not a chew toy, and a dog that sets out to destroy soft toys will get through it — as they will any plush.

Is the squeaker safe?

It is sealed inside the body. If the seams open, take the toy away and remove the squeaker before you bin it — a loose squeaker is the part that causes trouble.

Can I wash it?

Hand wash in cool water and let it dry fully. A machine cycle will pull the knit out of shape and can damage the squeaker.

Is it suitable for a cat?

It is sized and weighted for dogs. A cat will play with the legs, but at 32 cm the body is bigger than most cats want to wrestle.

Sizing. Measure your pet nose to base of tail and compare with the measurements in the description. Breed names are a poor guide - two dogs of the same breed can be 4 kg apart.

Washing. Beds and blankets are machine washable unless the description says otherwise. Wash covers separately, warm not hot, and tumble dry low so the filling keeps its shape.

Introducing something new. Change food gradually over about a week, mixing an increasing share of the new food in. Put a new bed where the old one was rather than somewhere better.

Safety. Supervise play with plush and rope toys, and put wand toys away between sessions. No toy is indestructible.
