Nail care

On dark claws, grinding beats guessing.

You cannot see the quick through a black nail, so cutting one is guesswork. A grinder takes it down a fraction at a time instead. Three speeds, a corundum wheel, three openings for different claw sizes, and a screen that tells you how much charge is left.

A word on the quick. The pink wedge inside a claw is living tissue with a blood supply. Cutting into it bleeds and hurts, and a pet remembers it. Keep styptic powder within reach before you start — not after.

Three speeds

7,500, 9,000 and 10,500 rpm

Start on the lowest while your pet works out what the noise is. The middle speed handles most cat and small-dog claws. The fastest is for the thick nails on a big dog that has gone too long between trims.

The wheel is white corundum — the same abrasive that is on a nail file. Keep it moving across the nail; held in one spot it builds heat, and heat is what makes a pet pull the paw away.

Three ports

Pick the opening that fits the claw

The cover over the wheel has three holes. The smallest steadies a cat, kitten or rabbit claw so only the tip meets the wheel. The middle one suits longer or harder nails. The largest is open enough for a retriever.

Choosing the right port matters more than choosing the speed: it keeps the fur of the paw away from the wheel and holds the nail at the angle you want.

Questions people ask

Is a grinder better than clippers?

For dark nails, yes — you take a little and look, instead of cutting and hoping. For pale nails it is preference; plenty of people cut first and grind the edge smooth afterwards.

How long does a paw take?

About a minute once your pet is used to it, and a good deal longer the first few times. That is normal and not a sign you are doing it wrong.

Does it get hot?

The nail does, if you hold the wheel in one place. Work in passes of two or three seconds and let it cool in between.

How loud is it?

About the level of an electric toothbrush. Let your pet hear it running across the room for a few days before it goes anywhere near a paw.

Does it catch the dust?

No. The cover keeps fur out of the wheel, but nail powder still escapes — work over a towel or somewhere you can wipe down. If that matters to you, the 7-speed grinder in this shop has a clip-on dust cap.

Does the wheel wear out?

Yes, slowly — it grinds more slowly as it polishes itself smooth. No spare is included with this one.

Sizing. Measure your pet nose to base of tail and compare with the measurements in the description. Breed names are a poor guide - two dogs of the same breed can be 4 kg apart.

Washing. Beds and blankets are machine washable unless the description says otherwise. Wash covers separately, warm not hot, and tumble dry low so the filling keeps its shape.

Introducing something new. Change food gradually over about a week, mixing an increasing share of the new food in. Put a new bed where the old one was rather than somewhere better.

Safety. Supervise play with plush and rope toys, and put wand toys away between sessions. No toy is indestructible.
