A pale claw is slightly translucent. Hold this clipper under one and the LED shines straight through it — the pink wedge you can see is the quick, and everything past it is safe to take off. It is a small scissor-style clipper, sized for cats, kittens, puppies and small dogs.
A word on the quick. The pink wedge inside a claw is living tissue with a blood supply. Cutting into it bleeds and hurts, and a pet remembers it. Keep styptic powder within reach before you start — not after.
The light
Two brightness levels, one button
The button on the handle turns the light on and switches between the two levels: a soft one for looking through a nail, and a brighter one for finding a pale claw in thick fur. It runs on a single CR2032 coin cell that changes from the base.
It does nothing for black nails. No light passes through them, so nothing shows — and that is true of every LED clipper sold, not just this one. On dark claws, take thin slices and watch the cut face; when a small pale circle appears in the middle, stop. Or grind instead of cutting.
Safety
A slide lock, and an edge shaped to miss the pad
A slide on the side locks the jaws shut so it cannot open in a drawer or a bag. The cutting edge is curved rather than straight, so the claw sits down into the notch and the lower jaw stays clear of the pad.
It is 10.5 cm end to end and weighs 51 g — held like a pen, not like a pair of shears.

Questions people ask
Will the light work on black nails?
No. It works by shining through the nail, and nothing gets through a dark one. On black claws take a thin slice at a time and look at the cut end — a small pale circle appearing in the centre means stop. A grinder is the better tool for dark nails.
What battery does it take?
A CR2032 coin cell — the same one used in car keys and kitchen scales. One comes fitted, and the base opens to change it.
Is it big enough for a Labrador?
No. The jaws are sized for cat and small-dog claws. A large dog's nails need a bigger clipper or a grinder.
What if I cut too far?
It bleeds, it stings, and it happens to most people eventually. Press a pinch of styptic powder or plain cornflour against the tip for thirty seconds. Buy the powder before you need it.
Can I use it on a rabbit or a guinea pig?
Yes. Their claws are in the same size class as a cat's, and the light works on them for the same reason.
