Blunt blades pull rather than cut, and a pulled coat is how a dog learns to hate being groomed. These are proper grooming shears — 4CR stainless hardened to 62 HRC, with an adjustable tension screw and an offset handle, in a zip case that keeps the edges off each other between trims.

The steel

Hardened, and adjustable

4CR stainless at 62 HRC. That number is the hardness of the steel, and it is the difference between an edge that lasts a season and one that rolls over the first time it meets a matted patch.

The pivot is a tension screw, not a fixed rivet. Shears that feel loose can be tightened rather than thrown away, which is most of why a good pair outlives a cheap one.

The tools

Each blade does one job

Straight shears for length. Curved shears for following the line of a leg or a muzzle without leaving a flat edge. Thinning shears to take weight out without taking length. Chunkers for blending the join between the two.

You do not need all four to start. You do need the right one for the cut you are making, which is why the sets come in different sizes.

Comb, cloth and a zip

A steel comb with wide and fine teeth for lifting the coat before you cut, and a cloth for wiping the blades down after.

The case matters more than it sounds. Loose shears in a drawer knock edges against each other, and a nicked edge is a pulled coat.

The same shears in two finishes: black blades with gold handles, or the iridescent rainbow. Both carry the same etched mark on the blade.

Questions people ask

What exactly is in each set?

The options run from three to six pieces, and the piece count is in the name of each one. What we are still confirming with the maker is the exact tool in each four-piece set — their own listing does not spell it out, and we are not going to guess on your behalf. If you need a specific shear (a chunker, say, or a curved pair), email us before you order and we will confirm which set has it.

How long are the blades?

We are not printing a number yet, and here is why: the maker’s own listing says 8 inches in the title and 6 inches three times in the specification. Those cannot both be right, and a shear that turns up two inches shorter than you expected is a bad afternoon. We have asked, and we will put the measured length here as soon as we have it.

What does 62 HRC mean?

It is a hardness rating for the steel. Higher means the edge holds longer but is more brittle if you drop it on tile. 62 is the range professional grooming shears sit in — kitchen scissors are usually somewhere in the 50s.

How do I look after them?

Wipe the blades after every use, especially if the coat was damp, and put them back in the case rather than a drawer. A drop of oil on the pivot once a season. Never cut anything but hair with them — one pass through a bit of matted grit is enough to take the edge off.

Are they safe to use on a cat?

The tools are the same, but cat skin is thinner and moves more, so work in small passes with a comb between the blade and the skin. For a badly matted cat, a groomer with clippers is safer than any pair of scissors.

Sizing. Measure your pet nose to base of tail and compare with the measurements in the description. Breed names are a poor guide - two dogs of the same breed can be 4 kg apart.

Washing. Beds and blankets are machine washable unless the description says otherwise. Wash covers separately, warm not hot, and tumble dry low so the filling keeps its shape.

Introducing something new. Change food gradually over about a week, mixing an increasing share of the new food in. Put a new bed where the old one was rather than somewhere better.

Safety. Supervise play with plush and rope toys, and put wand toys away between sessions. No toy is indestructible.
