Dental care

Brushing is the one part of dental care you can do at home. This makes it quicker.

A flat toothbrush cleans one face of a tooth per pass, and a dog gives you about three passes before they have had enough. This head has three rows of bristles set in a U, so one stroke along the teeth reaches the outside, the biting edge and the inside together. Same few seconds, three times the surface.

The head

Three faces in one stroke

The side rows lean in toward each other, so the tooth sits between them and the top row runs along the edge. You brush the way you would anyway — along the teeth — and the shape does the rest.

That matters most at the back, where the big chewing teeth are, where the plaque builds fastest, and where no dog will let you linger.

Measurements: 174 mm long, head 22 mm wide and 15 mm deep

The size

Made for a dog’s mouth

174 mm long, with a head 22 mm across and 15 mm deep. Right for most small and medium dogs.

For a cat or a very small toy breed the head will be a mouthful. A finger brush is usually the easier start for them.

The four colours standing in a row beside a corgi

Four colours

One brush per dog

Orange, green, teal and yellow. The colour is not decoration in a house with more than one dog — it is how you stop sharing a brush between mouths.

Sold singly, in twos of one colour, or as a four-pack with one of each. Each brush arrives in its own sealed bag.

The handle

Long enough to reach the back

The handle is long and flat with a moulded grip, so you can hold the lip up with one hand and reach the back teeth with the other without putting your fingers in the way.

Replace it when the bristles start to splay. A splayed brush slides over plaque instead of lifting it.

Questions people ask

Will it remove tartar?

No, and nothing you use at home will. Brushing removes plaque, the soft film that hardens into tartar over a few days. Once it has hardened, it takes a scale and polish at the vet. You will see a before-and-after photo in the gallery from the maker — treat that as what regular brushing prevents, not what one brush undoes.

What toothpaste should I use?

Dog toothpaste only. Never human toothpaste: many contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs, and dogs swallow all of it rather than spitting. Dog paste comes in flavours they tend to treat as a reward, which helps.

How often?

Daily is what vets aim for, because plaque starts hardening within a couple of days. A few times a week is still far better than never. Short and often beats long and rare.

My dog will not let me near their mouth.

Few do at first. Start with paste on your finger for a few days so the taste becomes the good part, then the brush on the front teeth only, for seconds. Build up from there. Stop before they struggle, not after.

Can I use it on my cat?

The head is 22 mm across, which is a lot of brush for a cat’s mouth. Most cats do better with a finger brush or a small single-headed one.

Sizing. Measure your pet nose to base of tail and compare with the measurements in the description. Breed names are a poor guide - two dogs of the same breed can be 4 kg apart.

Washing. Beds and blankets are machine washable unless the description says otherwise. Wash covers separately, warm not hot, and tumble dry low so the filling keeps its shape.

Introducing something new. Change food gradually over about a week, mixing an increasing share of the new food in. Put a new bed where the old one was rather than somewhere better.

Safety. Supervise play with plush and rope toys, and put wand toys away between sessions. No toy is indestructible.
