2-in-1 Pet Nail Clipper and Grinder: Cut One End, Smooth the Other

Nail care

Cut first. Then take the edge off.

A clipper at one end, a diamond grinder at the other, and a small screen in the middle telling you how much charge is left. Take the tip off, turn the tool around, round the corner smooth — without hunting for a second tool while your pet decides it has had enough.

A word on the quick. The pink wedge inside a claw is living tissue with a blood supply. Cutting into it bleeds and hurts, and a pet remembers it. Keep styptic powder within reach before you start — not after.

The two ends

A stainless jaw and a diamond wheel

The clipper takes the tip off. The grinder smooths what is left, which is the part that snags carpet and scratches your forearms. A clear cup catches the clippings instead of firing them across the room.

The grinder wheel sits under a cover with three openings: a small one for cat and puppy claws, a middle one for longer nails, and an open port for a big dog.

Charge and controls

A screen, a lock and two lights

The panel shows the charge as a number, so you find out it is flat before the pet is on your lap rather than after. It charges over USB from a 300 mAh cell, and the same panel carries the charging and sharpening-alert indicators printed on the tool.

There is a lock so it cannot switch on by accident in a drawer. An LED at each end lights the nail while you work — on pale nails that shows the quick; on dark ones it only shows you the claw.

Working with it

Slowly, at first

A grinder makes a noise and a vibration your pet has never felt. Run it in the same room for a few days without touching a paw, then do one nail and stop. Most of the trouble people have with grinders comes from introducing them too fast.

Grind in passes of two or three seconds rather than holding it against the nail. Friction makes heat, and heat is what a pet objects to.

Good to know

Questions people ask

Do I need to use both ends?

Most people cut, then grind for about ten seconds a nail. If your pet will not tolerate the clipper at all you can grind the whole nail down instead — it takes longer and it is gentler.

How loud is it?

Quieter than a hairdryer, louder than an electric toothbrush. Nothing is silent once a motor is next to a cat's ear, so give it a few days rather than one sitting.

Will the LED show the quick?

On pale nails, yes. On black nails no light gets through and nothing shows — which is exactly where grinding earns its keep, because you can take a fraction at a time and watch the cut face.

How long does a charge last?

The cell is 300 mAh, which covers several short sessions. It is a tool you top up every few months, not one you charge weekly.

Can I use it on a cat?

Yes. Use the smallest opening on the grinder cover, and expect the first few attempts to be one nail at a time.

Are spare grinder wheels included?

No. The wheel wears down slowly with use; how fast depends on how many nails and how thick they are.

Sizing. Measure your pet nose to base of tail and compare with the measurements in the description. Breed names are a poor guide - two dogs of the same breed can be 4 kg apart.

Washing. Beds and blankets are machine washable unless the description says otherwise. Wash covers separately, warm not hot, and tumble dry low so the filling keeps its shape.

Introducing something new. Change food gradually over about a week, mixing an increasing share of the new food in. Put a new bed where the old one was rather than somewhere better.

Safety. Supervise play with plush and rope toys, and put wand toys away between sessions. No toy is indestructible.
