Nail care

Seven speeds, under 45 decibels, and a cap for the dust.

The two things that make pets hate nail grinders are the noise and the powder. This one runs under 45 dB — a fridge humming rather than a hairdryer — and a cap clips over the wheel to catch most of the dust. Seven speeds, so you can start slow and stay there as long as your pet needs.

A word on the quick. The pink wedge inside a claw is living tissue with a blood supply. Cutting into it bleeds and hurts, and a pet remembers it. Keep styptic powder within reach before you start — not after.

Speed

6,000 to 11,000 rpm, in seven steps

Settings one and two are slow enough for a puppy meeting a grinder for the first time. Three and four cover ordinary trims. Five to seven are for the thick claws on a big dog, where a slow wheel would take all afternoon.

Seven settings sounds like marketing until you have a nervous animal in your lap and want the speed between the two you would otherwise be choosing from.

Quiet, and lit

Under 45 dB, and three levels of LED

Under 45 decibels is the maker's figure — for reference, a quiet office is about 40 and a washing machine about 68. It is genuinely quiet for a grinder. It is not silent, and no grinder is.

The LED has three brightness levels, which matters more than it sounds: you are working on a small dark object held in a paw that keeps moving.

Dust and charging

A cap that clips on, and USB-C

Grinding a nail makes powder. Without a cap it goes into your pet's eyes and nose and over whatever you are sitting on. The cap clips over the wheel, catches most of it, and pulls off to empty.

It charges over USB-C — the same cable as a modern phone, not a spare micro-USB you have to keep track of. About three hours to fill, about four hours of running time, which in practice is months of trims.

Good to know

Questions people ask

Is it really that quiet?

Under 45 dB is the maker's figure and it is genuinely quieter than most grinders. It is not silent. Whatever the number, introduce it over several days rather than in one sitting — a pet's objection is to the surprise as much as the sound.

What does the dust cap actually do?

It clips over the grinding wheel and catches most of the nail powder, which otherwise ends up in your pet's face and on the rug. Pull it off to empty it.

Why would anyone need seven speeds?

Mostly so you can start slow. A puppy meeting a grinder wants setting one; a retriever with three months of growth wants setting seven. The steps in between are what let you move up gradually.

Should I buy the spare heads?

The grinding head wears down with use, and how fast depends on how many nails and how thick. One small cat and the fitted head will last a long time. Two big dogs and the kit with spares saves you reordering.

Does it work on cats?

Yes — smallest port, lowest speed. Cats mind the noise more than dogs do, so expect the first week to be nothing but letting them hear it running.

Can I use it while it charges?

Charge it first. Running a small motor off a charging cable is how the cable and the port get damaged.

Sizing. Measure your pet nose to base of tail and compare with the measurements in the description. Breed names are a poor guide - two dogs of the same breed can be 4 kg apart.

Washing. Beds and blankets are machine washable unless the description says otherwise. Wash covers separately, warm not hot, and tumble dry low so the filling keeps its shape.

Introducing something new. Change food gradually over about a week, mixing an increasing share of the new food in. Put a new bed where the old one was rather than somewhere better.

Safety. Supervise play with plush and rope toys, and put wand toys away between sessions. No toy is indestructible.
