Hand holding the green ball launcher as a border collie leaps for a tennis ball
Dog Tennis Ball Launcher: Spring-Loaded, Carries Two Spare Balls
Regular price $54.00

Fetch

Your arm gives out long before your dog does.

A spring-loaded tube: pull the handle back, drop a tennis ball in the front, release. It throws further than most people can, it throws the same distance every time, and there are no batteries. Two spare balls clip onto the side and a strap carries it over your shoulder.

Measurements: 62 cm closed, 90 cm fully drawn, 19 cm tall, 9 cm across the mouth

How it works

Pull further, throw further

The handle draws a spring back along a marked rod. The further you pull, the further the ball goes, and the marks mean you can repeat a throw rather than guess at it.

It is 62 cm long closed and 90 cm fully drawn, with a 9 cm mouth that takes a standard tennis ball.

Carrying

Two spares on board

Two ball clips on the side keep spares ready, so the walk does not end because the only ball went into the creek.

Two tennis balls are included. The shoulder strap leaves both hands free for the lead on the way to the park.

For the dog

Worth warming up for

Ball chasing is sprint, brake hard, twist, repeat — the exact movement that strains knees and shoulders. A few minutes of walking first and a sensible number of throws does more for a dog than an hour of flat-out launches.

Keep it short for puppies. Their joints are still growing, and vets generally advise against repetitive high-impact chasing until they are fully grown.

Two colours

Green or red

The same launcher in park green or a red that is easier to find when you put it down in long grass.

Rinse the mud off and let it dry. The maker does not rate it as water resistant, so it lives in the car boot, not the dam.

Questions people ask

How far does it throw?

The maker does not give a distance, so we are not going to invent one. It depends on how far you draw the handle, and the marked rod lets you repeat a throw once you find the one that suits your space.

What balls does it take?

Standard-size tennis balls. If you are buying more, pick dog tennis balls over sports ones: the felt on sports balls is abrasive and wears teeth down over years of fetch.

Is it right for my small dog?

A tennis ball is about 6.5 cm across. If that fills your dog’s mouth, carrying it back is hard work. At the other end, for a very large dog a tennis ball is small enough to be a choking risk. It suits the dogs in between.

Can a puppy use it?

Gently. Short sessions, low throws, lots of rest. Repetitive sprinting and braking is hard on joints that are still growing.

Does it need batteries?

No. It is entirely spring-powered, which also means there is nothing to charge and nothing to break in the rain.

Sizing. Measure your pet nose to base of tail and compare with the measurements in the description. Breed names are a poor guide - two dogs of the same breed can be 4 kg apart.

Washing. Beds and blankets are machine washable unless the description says otherwise. Wash covers separately, warm not hot, and tumble dry low so the filling keeps its shape.

Introducing something new. Change food gradually over about a week, mixing an increasing share of the new food in. Put a new bed where the old one was rather than somewhere better.

Safety. Supervise play with plush and rope toys, and put wand toys away between sessions. No toy is indestructible.
