Deshedding
Two sides, because knots and loose hair are different jobs.
One side has widely spaced teeth for pulling out dead undercoat. The other is narrower and closer together, for working a knot apart without cutting it off. Both sides on one handle, so you are not putting a tool down mid-groom.
The two sides
Wide for shedding, narrow for knots
The wide side is about 90 mm across, the narrow side about 65 mm. Work the wide side along the coat first to take out the dead hair, then use the narrow side only where you meet resistance.
The teeth are rounded at the tip. Go slowly over bony areas — a rake is a blade, not a comb, and it will catch on skin if you rush it.
Handle
Rubber, and shaped for one hand
Grooming a shedding dog takes longer than anyone expects, so the handle matters more than the teeth. This one is rubber-coated and non-slip, which is what you want when your hands end up covered in loose coat.

Questions people ask
Which size should I get?
Small for cats and small dogs, large for anything with a big surface area to cover. The teeth are the same; the head is wider on the large.
Will it cut the coat?
It is a rake, so it does strip dead undercoat rather than only combing it. Used gently along the lie of the coat it will not cut the topcoat. Used hard against the grain it can, so go slowly.
Is it safe on a cat?
On a long-haired cat, yes, with a light hand and the small size. Cats have thinner skin than dogs — stop at the first sign they are unhappy.
