This one is a ring — hook a finger through it, hang it off your wrist, or clip it to a belt loop while you deal with a phone, a coffee and a dog that has just seen another dog. 3 m of tape, a one-thumb brake, and a reflective band for the walk home in the dark.

The shape

The handle is the whole point

A ring spreads the pull across your hand instead of concentrating it on the web between thumb and finger, which is where a conventional retractable lead starts to hurt after twenty minutes.

It also hangs. Off a wrist, off a forearm, off a belt loop — so the moments when you need both hands stop being a problem.

The brake

One thumb, no reaching

The brake sits under your thumb where your hand already rests, so stopping the tape is one press rather than a grip change. On a lead you use every day, that is the difference between reacting and fumbling.

A quick-release clip on the other end, so clipping on does not become a two-handed job at the front door.

Questions people ask

What size dog is this for?

It suits small and medium dogs that walk on a loose lead. We are not publishing a maximum pull rating, because the maker has not given us one and we would rather say that than invent a number you might rely on. If your dog pulls hard enough to take you off balance, use a fixed lead and a harness — that is true of every retractable lead, not just this one.

Does it have a light?

No. Some ring leashes in this style have a built-in LED; this one does not, and there is no battery in it. The reflective band is what makes it visible at night, so pair it with your own light if you walk on unlit roads.

What is the difference between the two options?

The plain option is the leash by itself. The set adds a bag dispenser in the matching colour that clips onto the ring, with one roll of bags to start you off. Everything else is identical.

Can I lock it at a fixed length?

Yes. Press the brake and push it through to lock, which holds the tape where it is — useful crossing a road or waiting at a kerb. Release it the same way.

How do I clean it?

Wipe the body with a damp cloth. Let the tape run all the way out and dry fully before you retract it after a wet walk, or the damp sits inside the housing.

Sizing. Measure your pet nose to base of tail and compare with the measurements in the description. Breed names are a poor guide - two dogs of the same breed can be 4 kg apart.

Washing. Beds and blankets are machine washable unless the description says otherwise. Wash covers separately, warm not hot, and tumble dry low so the filling keeps its shape.

Introducing something new. Change food gradually over about a week, mixing an increasing share of the new food in. Put a new bed where the old one was rather than somewhere better.

Safety. Supervise play with plush and rope toys, and put wand toys away between sessions. No toy is indestructible.
